Nothing blasts away the cobwebs like some exercise in the outdoors, and it's a great way to relax, get some fresh air and feel rejuvenated by the experience. If you're going to spend time out in unforgiving weather conditions though, you should ensure that you have made the necessary preparations to ensure that it doesn't turn into a cold and unpleasant experience which could ultimately end up in you getting ill as a result of cold temperatures and an inability to stay dry. Waterproof clothing is essential if you want to get out in certain weather conditions. This article details some of the waterproof clothing available in order to keep you warm and dry on an outdoor adventure.

Waterproof clothing of the past tended to be made of rubber, and so were extremely heavy and hard to ventilate. It's all very well keeping the moisture out, but if you're sweating underneath you're still getting wet. Modern waterproof fabric is designed to keep out moisture but allow for the circulation of air, keeping you dry and cool. These new waterproof fabrics are constructed from all sorts of laminates and microfiber technologies.

Almost all clothes can withstand some exposure to water or moisture, but water resistant and repellent fabrics offer only a very limited protection against the elements. Water resistant clothes may be appropriate for outdoor activities in cloudy or drizzly weather conditions, but is not designed to keep a body dry during a heavy downpour.

In order for waterproof jackets and waterproof trousers to be called one hundred per cent waterproof, they should be able to sustain being hit with a large amount of water before they become saturated. Waterproof clothing is tested in the worst weather conditions, to ensure that rain and moisture rolls off the material and doesn't soak in. It often has particular ratings calculated in labs which relate to how heavy a downpour it can withstand. If you're taking part in outdoor sporting activities then it is even more important that you are well-protected from the elements.

There are many types of waterproof clothing to help you stay dry in unfavourable weather conditions, including full suits for kids, waterproof jackets, lightweight waterproof jackets, waterproof trousers and footwear. All these items are designed to repel precipitation, as well as provide air circulation. Activities like camping, trekking, hiking or mountaineering can require breathable waterproof clothing if it is to be enjoyed in all types of weather conditions. For extended periods outside it's also important to use a waterproof backpack to keep your tent and other belongings dry.
